Biography

Player #120 for Aston Villa, John Samuel Sharp, known as Jack Sharp played as a winger for the club in the outside right position.

Jack played for Villa in the 1897-98 and 1898-99.

Jack was born in Hereford on 15th February 1878 and made his debut for the club as a 19 year old on 2nd October 1897.

Villa had signed Jack from Hereford Thistle and made 24 appearances in his 2 seasons with the club.

Jack’s most prolific season came in 1897-98 when Villa went on to finish 6th.

In the following season Villa went on to win the League title with Jack appearing 8 times and scoring a goal every other game.

Despite his strong showing Jack could not ultimately replace the more established figures amongst Villa’s squad and needed to move on to gain regular first team football.

One of the doubts Villa had about Jack’s long term contribution to the team was his height, or rather lack of it, as George Ramsay and the Committee deemed him too small to play as a striker.

Jack made his final appearance for Villa on 18th February 1899 before moving on to Everton with brother Bert.

Everton came up with a cunning plan to overcome Jack’s ‘height’ issues - they converted him into a winger and enabled him to excel for them over the following decade.

Jack had played under the George Ramsay led Management Committee.

Jack passed away in Liverpool on 27th January 1938 aged 59.
