Villa had signed John from Heath Town FC in October 1955 and he would move on to Walsall August 1959 after playing his final game for Villa on Saturday, 15 November 1958 just over 2 months and 12 games after his debut with Villa heading to the bottom of the table.

John had played under manager Joe Mercer.

John passed away in Wolverhampton on 1 September 2001 aged 67.

Eric Houghton's Villa lose for the third successive game for the second time this season and lose for the eleventh time in sixteen as their terrible form continues. As a result, Villa make it four wins, three draws and eleven defeats in eighteen division one games so far this season. As a result Houghton would leave his managerial post with immediate effect with Villa facing an increasingly difficult fight to avoid relegation. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Bill Beaton made his sole appearance for Villa aged 23 after joining the club from Dunfermline Athletic in October 1958. Beaton moved on to Airdrie in February 1960. Also making their final appearance was full back John Sharples who made his thirteenth and final appearance for Villa aged 24 before moving to Walsall in August 1959.
