Biography
Player #410 for Aston Villa, Lawrence Canning known as Larry Canning, played as a Midfielder for the club. Larry played for Villa between 1948-49 and 1953-54 making 41 appearances and scoring 3 goals.
Larry was born in Cowdenbeath, West Fife, Scotland on 1 November 1925 and made his debut appearance for Villa on Saturday, 11 September 1948 at the age of 22.
Villa had signed Larry from Paget Rangers in December 1943 aged 18 and he signed professional forms in October 1947 having worked as an engineer in the RAF during World War Two, being posted to Malta and Italy.
Larry starred for Villa as a youth player during war time football, scoring twice for Villa away to Derby County on 11 December 1943. However national service intervened and Larry wouldnโt return to Villa until 1947 following which he signed professional forms with the club.
Larry was a regular feature in Villaโs reserve team in the Central League playing as a centre forward or inside man and scored 10 goals in the 1947-48 season as well as fourteen for the Third team.
Larry made two appearances in the 1948-49 season as deputy to Trevor Ford but given the prowess of Villaโs leading man, the understudy restrained to become a first rate wing half back.
Stockily built, Larry shined in whatever position he played whether at centre forward, half back or outside left despite his preference for the intermediate line and was known as an excellent golfer of which he often partook in his downtime between Villa commitments.
Although Larryโs first team exposure was relatively limited - he only reached double figure league appearances for Villa once with 16 in 1950-51 - Larry went on to become synonymous with football in the Midlands.
Having signed from Paget he soon became a fan favourite despite his limited appearances however it was as a broadcaster - after his retirement - that Larry found fame.
Larry had played his last game for Villa on Wednesday, 31 March 1954 aged 28 and moved on to Kettering Town
After retirement he was invited by famed commentator David Coleman to take part in an open mic competition on Sportsnight and although Larry did not win he did go on to a successful career as the โMr Football of the Midlandsโ and his voice was recognisable to generations of listeners on radio and TV when it came to local games.
Larry also later became an Aston Villa Director.
Larry had played under Villa managers Alex Massie, George Martin and Eric Houghton and he passed away from Vascular Dementia in Nottingham on 6 April 2012 aged 86.
From Birminghammail.co.uk 24th October 2012:
โLast night Larryโs widow Margaret Canning, 78, confirmed that her husband had passed away on Wednesday.
Margaret said: โI have been overwhelmed by the amount of people who have been in touch or sent flowers.
โI would have thought people had forgotten oldies like us.
โIt is so lovely to know that so many people thought so well of him. Although his final years were not easy I know he would have been very touched by the response he has had in the last few days.
โLarry was a wonderful, generous and caring man to everybody he ever met โ unless he met you on a football pitch! Or a golf course for that matter. He was a very competitive sportsman.
โThatโs probably the reason he was so good at it, to be honest. Itโs also why he was one of the only journalists Brian Clough ever had any time for. Brian would always call him Mr Canning, and I donโt think he ever failed to get an interview with him.
โThey were very similar characters when it came to sport โ the kind of characters you donโt see too much in the game nowadays.โ

On This Day
Villa's horrible run of results continues as they lose for the fifth time in six under Alex Massie. It's penalty woe for the second game in succession as referee Taylor awards a very questionable spot kick to gift the hosts the lead after just 14'.
Villa reacted with all the play and all the opportunites only for Arsenal to double their lead on the stroke of half time with a rare attack.
Referee Taylor then wrapped up the points for the home side - awarding them his second penalty of the game.
Although luck and decisions are going against them nothing can hide the fact that Villa remain joint bottom of the table after 7 games in 1948-49.
Midfielder Larry Canning, 22, makes his Villa debut after joining from Paget Rangers in December 1943.
Forward Jackie Martin, 34, makes the last of his 91 appearances for Villa during which time he scored 22 goals before retiring from football.

No poor refereeing decisions this time but Villa lose their 6th game in 7 having not won in 8 since the opening day of the season and remain joint bottom of the table alongside Everton.
Villa take the lead, lose the lead, equalise as George Edwards scores an excellent solo goal for his second in two games before Newcastle hit two more to consign Villa to another defeat.
Winger Jock Mulraney makes his debut for Villa aged 32 after joining from Kidderminster Harriers the previous evening.

Villa concede first for the sixth consecutive game in which they have failed to keep a clean sheet.
Villa fail to score for the second successive game having scored in all of their first seven.
Villa are without a win in six games losing four under the disaster that is proving to be the management committee structure adopted at the start of the campaign rather than appointing a professional manager to replace Alex Massie.
Villa's latest defeat comes against a Bolton side, second from bottom, who are reduced to 10 men for the majority of the second half.

Villa, now with a single win in twelve games under the management committee structure, manage to draw at home to leaders Arsenal, in what the win against then leaders Newcastle apart is probably their best performance of the season.
Villa however concede first for the ninth time in 12 games but are the better side for much of the game and get a deserved second half equaliser.

Villa now have a single win in fourteen games under the failing management committee structure, fail to score and lose for the second successive game.
Villa concede first for the eleventh time in 14 games as they suffer their eighth defeat in fourteen.
Villa slump to 19th - their lowest position of the season.
There is however no sign whatsoever that the disastrous tenure of the management committee will end with the appointment of a manager any time soon.
Meanwhile referee Jackson has a shocking game as he calls time prematurely with players injured and undergoing treatment on the pitch. Such was the anger and confusion that players remained on the pitch in the full, and correct, expectation that play would be restarted to reached its full and proper conclusion. Jackson failed to do so.
Jackson would later make the entirely erroneous claim that the injuries had been suffered in the 90' of the game.

Villa are desperately unlucky at White Hart Lane after going two behind within a minute of the restart they fight back to 2-2 only to have a penalty awarded against them with 10 minutes remaining.
Joe Rutherford however pulls off an excellent save to keep the scores equal however the referee orders a retake, for no obvious infringement, and this time the spot kick is successful and Villa are harshly beaten at the last by the League leaders.
George Martin's Villa lose for the fourth successive game.

It is Villa's first home defeat of 1951-52 as they drop to joint 7th alongside their next opponents Tottenham.
