Lovre Kalinić

Player #924 for Aston Villa, Lovre Kalinić, has played as a goalkeeper for the club since the 2018-19 season. Kalinić is the 99th custodian of the Villa goal in professional football.

Lovre was born in Split, Croatia on 3 April 1990

Villa had signed Lovre from KAA Gent for a fee of £5,400,000 in January 2019.

Kalinić went on to make 7 League and 1 FA Cup appearance for Villa in his debut season.

Over those games Kalinić conceded 15 goals at a ratio of 1.88 goals per game during which Villa lost 4, drew 3 and won 1.

Those figures placed Kalinić’s performance well behind Villa’s other ‘keeping options (Ørjan Nyland 1.47, Jed Steer 1.00) and by mid February he lost his place in the Villa first team and failed to regain it during Villa’s promotion run in.

Kalinić started the 2019-20 season as fourth choice ‘keeper behind new signing Tom Heaton, Jed Steer and Ørjan Nyland and it would not be until Tuesday, 17 December 2019 in the 5-0 EFL Cup win over Liverpool that he was named in a match-day squad for which he remained an unused substitute.

Kalinić would make the squad for three consecutive games in January 2020, one each in the League, FA Cup and EFL Cup but remained unused. Kalinić was the sent out on loan to FC Toulouse from 20 January 2020 to 30 June 2020 and paid no further part in Villa’s Premier League or EFL Cup campaign.

Kalinić remained with Villa for the 2020-21 season facing even more competition in the form of new Villa number one Emiliano Martinez and Jed Steer whilst Tom Heaton continued his recovery from long term injury.

Kalinić could not break into first team selection however as Martinez immediately hit form in goal for Villa and Jed Steer was his de facto deputy. Kalinić did however make two unused substitute appearances in the EFL Cup in September and October 2020.

With Tom Heaton’s recovery and likely return to the first team squad at the turn of the year Villa sent Kalinic out on loan once again to HNK Hadjuk Split from 18 January 2021 to the end of the 2020-21 season.

Kalinic’s contract runs to the summer of 2023 with little sign of another first team opportunity with Villa being on the horizon.
