Stephen Ireland

Player #827 for Aston Villa, Stephen James Ireland played as a midfielder for the club between 2010-11 and 2012-13 making 60 appearances and scoring once.

Ireland was born in Cobh, County Cork on Friday, 22 August 1986 and was signed in what was essentially a swap deal with James Milner as the mis-management prevalent at Villa at the time made the misguided acquisition of Ireland whilst enabling the richest club in country to avoid paying a full value transfer fee for Villa’s best player.

Even had Ireland proved a success in claret and blue the loss of Milner would make any deal a bad one however the structure of the deal and nature of the player meant an outcome that must rank as one of the worst ‘swaps’ in English footballing history,

Ireland signed for a reported fee of £8,730,000 on 18 August 2010 and was handed his debut by caretaker manager Kevin MacDonald on Sunday, 22 August 2010 in the 0-6 away defeat to Newcastle United in what was to set the tone of Ireland’s Villa career.

Ireland made 6 more Premier League starts in 30 games before Villa called it quits and sent Ireland out on loan to Newcastle United for the remainder of the season (2 appearances).

Houllier was replaced by Alex McLeish for the 2011-12 season and the much maligned manager attempted to construct a squad capable of providing the supply to the talented penalty box goalscorer but limited footballer Darren Bent.

Ireland however wasn’t the spark McLeish had hoped for and despite an extended run in the team - 29 appearances including 24 starts - Ireland contributed just a single goal in the 3-1 away win at Chelsea on Saturday, 31 December 2011 and 3 assists as Villa once again struggled.

For 2012-13 Paul Lambert replaced McLeish and despite a policy of recruiting and playing lower league players ahead of established first teamers he found a place for Ireland in 27 squads garnering 17 appearances before Ireland was handed his final appearance for Villa on Tuesday, 22 January 2013 in the FA Cup 4th Round defeat to lower league Millwall aged 26.

For 2013-14 Ireland was once again sent out on loan, this time to Stoke City making the move permanent in January 2014 on a free transfer aged 27.
