Biography

Player #190 for Aston Villa, Thomas Riley, known as Tom Riley played as a full back for the club.

Tom played for Villa between 1905-06 and 1907-08 making 16 appearances over his 3 seasons.

Tom was born in Blackburn in March 1882 and made his debut appearance as a 24 year old on the 13th April 1906.

Villa had signed Tom from Brentford earlier in the month.

Tom would only appear in the league for Villa and was used as a back up rather than a regular first team player.

Tom would make his final appearance on 5th October 1907 aged 25 and so his 18 months at Villa actually featured appearances in 3 different seasons.

Tom played under the George Ramsey led Management Committee.

Tom moved on to Brentwood FC in June 1908.

Tom passed away in Southampton in 1939 aged 57.

Match Timeline

On This Day

Villa win consecutive games to end the season in 8th place having recorded eighteen wins, five draws and fifteen defeats in their thirty eight division one games. A season that had been notable for the number of debuts and final appearances - including a significant portion who both first appeared, and left in the same season, and sometimes the same month - underlined the status of transition that the club was in. The season itself couldn’t have been more contrasting to the exciting, goal hungry season of 1904-05 and much more stability was to be needed for 1906-07 if Villa were to return to trophy winning form.

On This Day

Villa end the season having failed to score in their final three matches but despite spells of indifferent form they improve on 1905-06's finishing position of 8th to sit 5th in the final table having recorded nineteen wins, six draws and thirteen defeats in their thirty eight division one games. Once again however the season was one of transition as the sheer volume of changes to the starting line up and the arrivals to and departures from the squad meant the team was crying out for stability in order for it to challenge for honours once again. With Harry Hampton showing glimpses of his previous form when available much was resting on his, Joe Bache’s and Albert Hall’s goalscoring capabilities to drive the team higher.

Villa open the season with a chastening home defeat to Manchester United - a team only promoted from the second tier for the first time for the previous season and who would go on to be crowned champions of the current campaign. Meanwhile, winger Charlie Wallace made his Villa debut aged 22 after moving from Crystal Palace in May 1907 for a fee of £500. Whilst, goalkeeper Harry Cooch made his final appearance for Villa aged 28 after making 25 appearances across his seven seasons with the club. Cooch had the relative misfortune to play for Villa during the same period as legendary ‘keeper Billy George which led to a custodian of quite some quality being selected far less than his talent allowed, Cooch would however cement his legacy with the club with his behind the scenes and coaching work across the coming decades. Also appearing for the final time was forward Frederick Chapple who made his eleventh and final Villa appearance aged 23 before moving on to Birmingham in December 1907.
