This game signified the first day of the reimplementation in English football's of the continental style card system. Originally used from 1976 to 1981, the use of coloured cards had been suspended by the FA, international pressure however led them to be reintroduced ahead of the 1987-88 season. Cautions and sending offs had continued unaffected during the period but once again coloured cards were to be shown on field.
